Clark R. Hammond's Profile

Clark R. Hammond specializes in bankruptcy, commercial and real estate loan defaults and workouts, construction litigation, the workout of defaulted municipal and commercial bonds, creditor’s and debtor’s rights, securities litigation, and general commercial litigation. Additionally, he advises clients in regulatory, administrative, and litigation involving the Perishable Agricultural Commodity Act (PACA).

Clark earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Miami in 1975, and a Juris Doctor degree (cum laude) from Cumberland School of Law in 1984, where he served as Associate Editor of the Cumberland Law Review. He is a member of Curia Honoris, Cumberland’s highest academic honor society. From 1984 to 1985, he served as law clerk to the Honorable Robert B. Propst, United States District Judge, Northern District of Alabama.

Clark’s honors and awards include the Alabama Super Lawyer designation in the areas of Construction Litigation, Business Litigation, Civil Litigation; recognition from the Birmingham Business Journal as one of the “Best of the Bar” in construction law and creditors’ rights and bankruptcy, and inclusion in the respected Best Lawyers in America directory in bankruptcy and creditors’ rights/insolvency and reorganization, construction law, and litigation – bankruptcy. Additionally, he holds the Mid-South Super Lawyer designation. Notably, he was awarded the Lawyer of the Year – Construction award in 2016 and the Lawyer of the Year – Construction Litigation award in 2018 within the Birmingham market by Best Lawyers. Martindale Hubbell has recognized his expertise with an AV Peer Review Rating.

Clark is also adjunct professor of mediation at the University of Alabama School of Law.

When Clark is not practicing law, he enjoys spending time with his wife, three children, and four grandchildren. In addition, he is active in his local church.  Beyond that he is an active senior official in USA Swimming. He is certified as a National Championship Referee and was the meet referee for USA Swimming’s Olympic Trials in 2021.  He also served as a World Aquatics Referee for eight years as a result of being nominated by USA Swimming for that position. He was the former Chair of the National Officials Committee, which oversees the officiating of competitive swimming, and formerly the Chair of the Rules and Regulations Committee, which is responsible for setting the rules and regulations governing competitive swimming. Clark served on the Board of Directors from 2014-18 and recently completed a second four year term in 2025.
